Landlord Quest is a comedic point-and-click adventure game made in the style of 90's educational software. Players take control of Doug Gripp Jr., who has just inherited his father's real estate company.
I developed the game as a solo project, writing code and designing assets that I then assembled using the Adventure Game Studio game engine.
Landlord Quest is available for digital download on Itch and Steam.
Landlord Quest is an escape room-style game with an interactive world. Players are tasked with exploring Doug's office, collecting items, and solving puzzles. I created multiple pixel art background images, showing different areas of focus within the office environment.
Doug Gripp is the main character of Landlord Quest. He's not a particularly nice guy, but he isn't empathetic enough to realize that. His design communicates a comfort born from taking advantage of others, while avoiding "punching down" on appearance.
Doug walks, talks, and interacts with props around the office. These actions all required bespoke animations, which I made using Pixaki and After Effects.
Landlord Quest features a retro aesthetic reminiscent of 1990's computer games. Taking inspiration from consumer operating systems of the time, I built a cohesive set of interfaces that feels intuitive and responsive.
I created multiple fullscreen overlays featuring skeuomorphic designs that immerse the player into the world of Landlord Quest.
These overlays communicate puzzle information to the player, and many of them feature animation, interactive buttons, and coded expressions.
Landlord Quest has multiple items that players can add to their inventory. I made distinct pixel art icons for all of these items, following the visual style established by the game's interface.
