Transnational is a two-season digital series I created for VICE, highlighting global transgender experiences. I was an essential member of a team of LGBTQIA+ producers and journalists at VICE who approached management with a pitch for trans stories by trans voices, which are often ignored by news media.
As Series Creator and Graphics Editor, I attended regular production meetings to plan episode topics, release strategies, and the creation of motion graphics assets.
I led a team of artists in creating Transnational's motion graphics design, stressing simple text and a mature color palette representing vibrant light breaking through darkness.
Inspired by the patterns found in passport books, Transnational's oscillating wave motif is a nod to the international nature of the show, as well as the struggles trans people face with government-issued identification.
I took this design language and developed a series of graphics templates that were used production-wide to ensure clear data visualization and continuity across episodes.
Transnational was a critical success, and won a Peabody Award and a GLAAD Award in 2022 for outstanding digital journalism.
